Consultation and organization

  • You will have a pre-operative consultation with an anesthesiologist and your surgeon to address all your questions: timelines, type of anesthesia, limitations, and post-operative care.

​​

  • Arrange transportation to and from the hospital. After the procedure, your mobility may be limited; a spacious car is ideal.

​​​

  • In some cases, the doctor may prescribe a routine of exercises before the procedure. This is what we call Prehabilitation.

Important preparations

THE DAY
BEFORE

  • At Talus, we will contact you by phone to remind you of the procedure, admission time, and any other important details.

​

  • Bring comfortable clothes, slippers (preferably closed-toe), and a toiletry bag with personal hygiene items.

​​

  • If you need crutches or another orthopedic device for your recovery, you must bring them to the clinic. Please discuss this with your surgeon.

​​

  • Do not eat or drink anything after midnight. You must fast for at least 8 hours prior to the procedure.

On the day of surgery

THE MORNING OF
THE PROCEDURE

  • Shower with antibacterial soap on the morning of the procedure, paying special attention to the area that will be operated on.

​​

  • Wear comfortable clothing: loose trousers, preferably with an elastic waistband, or shorts in the case of lower limb surgery. For upper limb surgery, wear a shirt that opens at the front.

​​

  • If you need to take any medication, check with the anaesthetist whether you may take it with a small sip of water.

​​

  • Bring all necessary documentation: medical insurance details, preoperative tests, and imaging studies — X-rays, CT scans or MRI scans — if you have not already submitted them.

​​

  • Bring a backpack to carry your belongings and to allow you to use crutches or an orthosis if needed.

​​

  • Leave jewellery and unnecessary valuables at home.

At the hospital, before entering the operating room

  • During the hours before surgery, your vital signs will be checked, a peripheral IV line will be placed, and the surgical area will be prepared.

​​

  • The ward nursing staff will be available to answer any questions that you or your family may have.

​​

  • If your surgery requires hospital admission, reception will arrange your admission to the room. One companion may stay with you in the room until you are taken to the operating room and again after surgery.

​​

  • Before entering the operating room, the surgical side and the joint to be operated on will be checked.

​​

  • In the operating room, the anesthesia technique will be performed and you will be positioned correctly for the procedure.

​​

  • Please bear in mind that some time may pass between being taken to the operating area and the actual start of the surgery.
